To become a member of the Consortium for Street Children, an organisation has to abide by the following criteria:

1. The organisation should be a UK registered charity or association.

2. The project should be a voluntary non-profit organisation in which individuals do not profit from the activities undertaken on behalf of the children, except as paid employees.

3. The project should be motivated by broadly humanitarian objectives in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which should not be secondary to partisan, political or religious aims.

4. The project should be flexible and broad based, with an approach which does not favor or reject any child on the ground of his/her sex, religion, race, political background or ethnicity, or favor or reject any attitude which children or their culture may traditionally hold unless this is in direct contravention of the UN Convention on the Right of the Child.

5. The objective of the project should not be to offer welfare on the street, but to bring about a long-term permanent improvement in the lives of the street and/or working children. This is achieved through outreach, formal and non-formal education, shelter, health and health education, training, psychological, emotional and/or spiritual support and/or advocacy. It should have agreed standards of childcare which all staff are compelled to uphold.

6. The project should be staffed by committed and qualified people experienced and trained in childcare and project management.

7. The project should have a permanent base and, as far as possible, a sound support structure in the city or town where it is working.
